The 2-1-2 Setup

The 2-1-2 is the sequence most traders learn first: a directional bar (2), an inside bar (1), and then the break of that inside bar. The inside bar is the market catching its breath; the break tells you whether the pause was a rest stop or a turning point.

2-1-2 bullish reversal

Reversal or continuation — the same bar decides

After a 2d, an inside bar, and a break of the inside bar's HIGH: that is the 2-1-2 bullish reversal — the down move paused and got rejected. Break the inside bar's LOW instead and the same three candles are a bearish continuation. One setup bar, two opposite trades, decided only by which trigger goes first. That is why naming the side matters: the same sequence is a reversal one way and a continuation the other.

The trade, the Strat way

Entry is the break of the inside bar's high or low — taken live at the level, not at the candle close. The stop belongs at the opposite side of the setup bar (many traders, and our alert engine, use the setup bar's 50% line: if price retraces through the middle of the bar it broke from, the 2 has failed). The first target is the prior structural level — the last pivot in the trade's direction; the measured move (one setup-bar range beyond the break) is the standard extension.

What failure looks like

A 2-1-2 that breaks out and then trades back through the setup bar's midpoint is a failed 2 — and failed 2s are themselves one of the most powerful signals in the method, because everyone who took the breakout is now trapped. If you trade 2-1-2s, you must know the failed 2, if only to recognize when you have become the fuel.

FAQ

What is the difference between 2-1-2 reversal and continuation?

The same three-candle shape. If the third candle breaks the inside bar against the first candle's direction, it is a reversal; with it, a continuation.

Where does the stop go on a 2-1-2?

Classically at the opposite extreme of the inside bar; the stricter convention is the setup bar's 50% line — a retrace through the middle of the bar means the break has already failed.

Which timeframes do 2-1-2s work on?

The pattern occurs on all of them. Higher-timeframe versions (daily and up) carry more participation, and versions aligned with full timeframe continuity are the classic A-grade context.
