What Is TheStrat?

TheStrat is a price-action methodology created by veteran floor trader Rob Smith. It starts from one observation that is true on every chart, every timeframe, every market: relative to the previous candle, the current candle can only do one of three things.

It stays inside the previous candle's range (a 1), it breaks one side only (a 2 up or 2 down), or it breaks both sides (a 3, the outside bar). There is no fourth option. Everything in TheStrat is built from that alphabet.

1 — inside
2u — breaks the high
3 — breaks both

Actionable signals, not predictions

TheStrat never asks you to predict. A setup is a specific sequence of 1s, 2s, and 3s; the trade triggers only when a defined level actually breaks — the moment a candle goes 2. Entry at the break, stop at the other side of the setup bar, targets at prior structure. If the level never breaks, there is no trade.

That definition of an actionable signal is why the method suits systematic alerting so well: the trigger is a price, not an opinion.

Timeframe continuity

The second pillar is full timeframe continuity — checking whether the hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly candles agree on direction. A 2u fired while every higher timeframe is also 2u is trading with the current. The same trigger against the higher timeframes is fighting it.

Trapped traders are the fuel

Most Strat reversal setups work for one mechanical reason: somebody is trapped. A breakout that fails leaves the breakout crowd holding losers; their exits push the other way. TheStrat's sequences are, at their core, a taxonomy of where the crowd got trapped and which level forces them out.

FAQ

Who created TheStrat?

Rob Smith, a veteran of the trading floor with over three decades in markets. He taught the method openly and freely for years and passed away in 2023; the community carries it forward.

Does TheStrat work on any market or timeframe?

The candle scenarios are universal — the 1/2/3 alphabet is true on any chart. Which specific setups carry a measurable edge varies by instrument and timeframe, which is why setups should be measured, not assumed.

Is TheStrat good for beginners?

Its vocabulary is small (three scenarios) and its rules are objective (enter on the break, stop at the setup bar), which makes it one of the more learnable price-action methods. The discipline of waiting for triggers is the hard part.
